Vardey Recruitment caught up with Rebecca Clayton, HR Specialist at R Human Resources to find out her thoughts on why we are in a market with a candidate shortage! Here are our findings.
"Many UK companies are struggling to recruit new staff for the following reasons:
Brexit – many Europeans have returned to their home countries so some jobs such as seasonal ones are harder to fill (this will impact the chain of recruitment so even if your business doesn’t employ seasonal staff, it will have an impact indirectly).
Home working – some companies will now be competing against London based companies who are allowing their staff to work from home with maybe the ad hoc day in London. We are finding this is mainly affecting the south coast. London salaries tend to be slightly higher. People are staying put! Living where they have always dreamed to live Eg Dorset and still working for a London company. Previously, they had to resign and relocate home and job!
Furlough – many employees are choosing to stay in their current roles for fear of another lockdown as they may receive furlough pay if the scheme is extended. Therefore there is a lack of candidates and we’ve heard that this is mainly affecting lower paid candidates".
It’s a candidate’s market – companies need to act fast and don’t delay on making offers. Companies should advertise the salary and benefits clearly ‘competitive salary’ no longer attract candidates – be open and make sure your salaries are competitive!
We’d love to hear your views on recruitment and if you are struggling to find talent don't hesitate to contact Clare at Vardey Recruitment clare@vardeyrecruitment.com. By using a specialist recruiter we can find people other generalist agencies are not connected to, also we have a large network of contacts to tap into! Unfortunately, the old fashioned "sit and wait to see" who applies to the "advert', these days are gone!
